LDComfort
HIGH-PERFORMANCE UNDERWEAR
I’m not a rider that dreams of long distance events. Sure,
I like to ride but I’m always reminded of a sitcom line
that goes, “I don’t wanna do anything for 24 hours nonstop...
even if it feels good.”
The reason behind this long-mileage aversion is, well...
to put it plainly...I simply don’t enjoy Monkeybutt.
We’ve all had the ‘Butt. The bony protuberances of the
human backside are simply not designed to carry weight
in one position for an extended time. Vibration and pressure
on these bones tends to restrict localized blood flow
in the surrounding tissue; this eventually results in
pain. The discomfort is further exacerbated by the build
up of moisture in commonly-worn cotton clothing which
lessens the ability of the skin to resist friction. Cotton
clothing also has seams that can wrinkle or wad up when
we begin to shift positions seeking relief. Since bike
ergos limit wiggle room in the cockpit, that lit-cigarette
pain soon begins right on those butt bones. Ouch...and
we may have another180 miles to go too. ‘Nuff said.
A custom saddle may lessen pressure-point problems but
fitting a seat to an individual backside can be both expensive
and inconvenient since it may require more than one visit
to correctly “tune” the foam. It takes an experienced
motorcycle-saddle builder with a clear understanding of
physical anatomy to properly build a long-mile seat and
they are not readily available to all of us. Realistically,
most of us are left with choosing a local upholsterer
or wading through rosy advertising claims in catalogues
and brochures if we seek to improve our seats over stock.
There is simpler path to consider. High-tech underwear.
Enter the folks at LDComfort in (Montesano), Wa.
The idea for LDComfort was originally brainstormed by
folks that produce wrestling equipment. When some long-rangers
were visiting, one was suffering an intense case of the
‘Butt. Since the rider had another 400 miles to ride,
it was suggested that he try wearing a wrestling singlet
under his riding gear figuring the singlet had no seams
to further irritate his condition. The tight/seamless
design worked well and, with some further tweaking and
upgrading of the singlet design, Long Distance Comfort
was born.
LDComfort Riding Gear uses a clever blend of technology
and design. Construction includes flat seams and rubber
“anti-slip” bands above the knees which prevent the garment
from riding up and forming painful folds. LDComfort also
incorporates the high-tech Dryline fabric which combines
a hydrophobic layer close to the skin and an external
hydrophilic layer which wick moisture away from the skin
keeping the rider dry, cool, and comfortable.
I rechecked my size when I got my shorts and top since
they fit way more snugly than I expected, like bicycle
shorts. But the proof is found not in the snide drollery
of my wife nor the amused chuckling of my Saturday co-riders
but out on the road.
Under my leathers, they performed as advertised on a recent
400 mile freeway test. No hotspots, no bunching up, and
the snugness acts like… shorts worn by pro-athletes. The
fly is a kangaroo-type pouch opening that required a bit
of finessing especially when pit stops become rushed but
it’s a minor inconvenience at best. The quality of the
garments is excellent as was their mail order service.
LDComfort garments machine/hand wash and tumble/air dry,
perfect for overnight stops on a long trip.
Pull on a pair and enjoy an Iron Butt secret. It’s your
butt, you know. Clothe it well.
